I spent the morning in Washington DC for a photo shoot which was eventually cancelled due to location conflicts. But driving through the city reminded me of something I used to imagine back when I was working in an office in Alexandria.
That is the ‘red-light’ Death Star.
Do you remember in Star Wars after they flew through the death star and delivered the blow to the weak spot on the inside of the giant floating war-ship? As it was exploding, their ships had to escape the flames which were gradually catching up to them. Of course, ultimately, they just barely escaped and the Death Star exploded.
Well, this is (roughly) a picture of the red-light Death Star:
It’s when you’re driving down a city street and all the lights, one by one, begin to turn yellow just as you get to them so that each new light you reach you just narrowly make it through without getting stopped. Most of us at this point start to put on the gas, knowing that if we get caught in one light, we’re probably going to get stuck in all of them.
Next time you’re driving in the city and the row of lights in front of you starts to turn yellow, hit the gas and think, “I’m in the Death Star!”. You might be surprised how the imaginary flames and the prospect of the Empire’s success can get you through there to your destination quite a lot more quickly.
Just don’t blame me for the red-light tickets you might be getting.
