I heard about vampires that they can’t come in unless you let them.
I used to be afraid of those bloodsuckers until I found that out!
They’ll knock and knock and wait patiently, just don’t give in.
They’ll bring gifts, tell jokes, make promises, just don’t give in.

Lucky for me, I never did; although I’m sure they tried real hard.
But I wasn’t afraid because the choice was mine to make.
No vital fluid would be drained, provided I just said no.
No hellish fate would await, provided I just said no.

But now that I’m grown I know, there’s no such dangerous creature.
But then again I’ve also learned, something more insidious looms.
Invisible, silent, ravaging everything in its path. It didn’t even ask!
Breaking, destroying, confusing everyone it meets. And it didn’t even ask!

Who could live under these conditions? Such a tyrant on the loose!
No one, I suppose. Doomed to all of this miserable company.
How could we possibly stop it on our own? What’s the use?
What other option but to despair? What is the use?

But eventually I noticed that there was someone knocking.
Maybe I’d thought he was a vampire, so I wouldn’t let him in.
Reasons aside, I’m sure there were many, it was only a matter of time.
I opened the door, he smiled and said, "It was only a matter of time."

Who would have thought this of the one who was waiting,
that’d he’d bind and shackle and expel that illusive beast?
In cries and screeching and clawing, I heard it say nothing at all.
Then turning to the man, planning to thank, I heard him say nothing at all.

Who would have thought that in his generous deed, the visitor would die?
It was then that I noticed, the blood on my shirt, the blood on my hands.
My guest lay lifelessly on the floor, and the crime was all mine!
My assailant expelled, but the visitor dead, what joy could i call mine?

In my lonliness and weeping and on the door the beast pounding
and without the strength to stop him, I knew eventually he’d break in.
But then from behind me, I heard a voice. Could it possibly be?
Yes it was the visitor, standing tall and strong. How could it possibly be?

He said, it had to be this way. "I had to die to get inside that beast."
Holding up a key he said, "And look what I’ve found."
He turned the key, locking the door, though beast continued its pounding.
Turning to me, "it is finished" he said and my heart continued its pounding.

Then turning to leave, the visitor said, now fear not, this peace is mine.
Now even though he’s gone, he’s here keeping this calm, calming fear.
Because every day I remember that awful beast outside my door.
But then I think, and then I remember my visitor inside my door.
